The BMV will request proof of insurance from drivers in these circumstances:
- After an auto accident.
- A driver receives a pointable (a moving traffic violation with points(s) associated) moving traffic violation within one year of receiving two other pointable moving traffic violations.
- After a serious traffic violation such as a misdemeanor or felony.
- A driver receives any pointable moving traffic violation and they were previously suspended for failing to provide proof of financial responsibility.
The driver’s insurance company must submit proof of insurance to the BMV in the form of a Certificate of Compliance (COC) document. It is filed electronically through the BMV's website. The police officer will not give you a physical form.
