To gain reciprocity, you must live or work within Indiana. Then you must obtain a PSID number (https://www.in.gov/dhs/fire-and-building-safety/public-safety-identification-psid- application/).
Once these qualifications are met, send an email to firefighterboard@dhs.in.gov and include (1) your full name, (2) your PSID number and (3) a copy of any fire certifications you already earned but for which you want to gain Indiana reciprocity. Your application will be processed upon receipt, and you will be notified if your application is incomplete. Typically this notification will be sent within seven business days.
IDHS fire staff will contact the state in which you gained your fire certifications to verify them. This process ensures your training is equal to or greater than the requirements needed for the Indiana certification.
If you want to receive reciprocity for a ProBoard Certification, IDHS staff also requires the last four digits of your Social Security Number to verify the certification through the ProBoard website.
