Asbestos is only a problem when it is disturbed, and IDEM’s suggestion for materials that are in good condition--not peeling, cracking or crumbling into a powder or dust—is to leave them alone. Demolition and renovation operations must follow asbestos rules, which may require the removal of friable asbestos.
