The shaking of a house does not automatically mean that the structure is being damaged. Limits are set on the use of explosives to protect against damage. In addition, homeowners within one mile of a permit area are eligible for Pre-Blast Surveys documenting the condition of structures prior to the commencement of blasting. The survey is free to the homeowner. Blasting data, which include blast records, seismograph recordings, and additional reports are maintained by the Division and the operator. These are available for public inspection at the mine site, and at the Division office in Jasonville. More information is available online. You may also contact the Division of Reclamation and talk with a Blasting Inspector. They may be reached at the Division of Reclamation Jasonville Office at (812) 665-2207, toll free within Indiana (800) 772-6463.
NOTE: Non-coal mining related questions should be directed to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security IDHS: Regulated Explosives Use (317) 233-0208 in Indianapolis.
