Indiana law requires that any person drilling or operating a well for oil and gas purposes must first obtain a permit from the Division of Oil and Gas. This includes oil wells, natural gas wells, coal bed methane wells, natural gas storage wells, geologic or structure test wells and injection wells associated with oil and gas operations including salt water disposal wells and enhanced oil or gas recovery wells.
Additionally, permits are required for private non-commercial gas wells drilled or operated to supply natural gas for use solely in dwellings or businesses located on the property of the well owner. Operation of these wells also requires a permit from the Division of Oil and Gas.
