Today's Indiana Guard Reserve focuses on serving Hoosiers by assisting the National Guard and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security in their domestic missions, as well as providing instruction to emergency management teams regarding the National Incident Management System (NIMS), designing and evaluating training exercises, and executing community support missions. Accordingly, the Indiana Guard Reserve may augment or embed with the National Guard during emergencies.
Another of the missions of the Indiana Guard Reserve is to in-process, train, and manage civilian volunteers who respond to the Governor's call for emergency service to their fellow Hoosiers.
Indiana Guard Reserve members routinely serve in the Soldier Readiness Processing Center and Civilian Overseas Processing Stations at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, near Edinburgh, Indiana. During the tax season from January through April, Indiana Guard members staff the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance office for Soldiers at Camp Atterbury. During the summer, Indiana Guard Reserve members also serve as cadre instructors for the JROTC Leadership Development Camp.
Additionally, the Indiana Guard Reserve serves Hoosiers by providing security in several community support missions, such as the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon, the Fort Wayne, Gary, and Mount Comfort Air Shows, and the 500 Festival Memorial Service. Each of the four brigades around Indiana also support their local communities by providing color guards for parades and military funerals, providing training and participation in local emergency management exercises, and serving on Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
