Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have each created an updated booster dose formula designed to protect against original strains of the virus, as well as Omicron variants that cause most new infections. Half of the vaccine is the original formula, while the other half is a new Omicron-targeted formula.
Both vaccines target the Omicron variants that cause most new infections. Updated boosters are expected to provide better protection against the virus and address waning vaccine effectiveness over time.
The CDC recommends that people stay up to date with their vaccinations and get boosted when eligible. Use CDC’s COVID-19 vaccination schedule, or answer a few questions on the CDC website to make sure you are up to date.
