Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna both make an updated, bivalent dose designed to protect against original strains of the virus, as well as Omicron variants that cause most new infections.
CDC recommends vaccinated people 6 months and older who have not had a bivalent dose receive one bivalent dose at least 2 months after their most recent monovalent dose. Unvaccinated people 5 and older are also recommended to receive one dose of bivalent vaccine.
Some people are eligible for a second bivalent dose. CDC recommends people 65 and older receive a second bivalent dose at least 4 months after their first bivalent dose. Immunocompromised people 5 and older are recommended to receive a second bivalent booster at least 2 months after their first bivalent dose. For immunocompromised people, additional doses may be administered at the discretion of their healthcare provider.
Children 6 months through 5 years have different recommendations based on the number of vaccine doses they have received. The CDC has guidance for everyone 6 months and older based on age and medical condition.
