This is not true. If a clinic has doses that need to be used at the end of the day, it has a list of eligible individuals who are called in to receive the shot so nothing is thrown away. The supply of COVID-19 vaccine is limited and the goal is for everyone to be able to get vaccinated (get a shot) as soon as enough supply is available. Indiana has mas a detailed plan to make sure there are enough vaccines (shots) for groups at risk. The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) made these decisions based on information and recommendations from experts. IDOH also considered recommendations by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and several state advisory committees.
The recommendations were made with these goals in mind:
- Decrease death and serious disease as much as possible.
- Preserve functioning of society.
- Reduce the extra burden COVID-19 is having on people already facing disparities.
