10-digit dialing for southern Indiana's 812 area code took effect in 2015. The 812 area code had faced no major changes since the 1940s but was running low on available numbers, following the same trend that's happened throughout North America and in other parts of Indiana. New phone numbers can now be assigned with the new 930 area code, which "overlays" the entire 812 area. By adding 10-digit dialing, no one with an existing 812 number had to change to a new number or incur the expenses that go with a number change (such as printing costs for new stationery, signage, etc.).
