Moderna has created an updated booster dose formula designed to protect against original strains of the virus, as well as Omicron variants that cause most new infections. The updated Moderna booster for people 6 and older also uses its original formula for half of the vaccine and a new Omicron-targeted formula for the other half of the vaccine.
Moderna’s (pediatric) bivalent booster for children 6 to 11 years is 25 mcg, one half of the adult bivalent booster dosage. The Moderna bivalent booster for children 6 to 11 years is drawn from the exact same vials used for the Moderna bivalent booster for adults. The Moderna bivalent booster for children 6 to 11 has the same ingredients as the adult bivalent booster, and each ingredient in the pediatric booster is about half of the amount in the adult booster.
Updated, bivalent COVID-19 vaccines help to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination and help to fight off a wider range of variants.
