Pfizer-BioNTech has created an updated booster dose formula designed to protect against original strains of the virus, as well as Omicron variants that cause most new infections. The updated Pfizer-BioNTech booster for people 5 and older uses its original formula for half of the vaccine and a new Omicron-targeted formula for the other half of the vaccine.
Pfizer’s (pediatric) bivalent booster for children 5 to 11 years is 10 mcg, one third of the adult bivalent booster dosage. The Pfizer bivalent booster for children 5 to 11 comes in a different vial than the adult bivalent booster because it must to be diluted unlike the adult booster. The Pfizer bivalent booster for children 5 to 11 has the same ingredients as the adult bivalent booster, and each ingredient in the pediatric booster is about one third of the amount in the adult booster. The only addition to the Pfizer bivalent booster for children 5 to 11 is less than a milligram of diluent, which is used in all other Pfizer pediatric vaccines and is a standard ingredient in many vaccines.
Updated, bivalent COVID-19 vaccines help to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination and help to fight off a wider range of variants.
