Pfizer-BioNTech has created an updated booster dose formula designed to protect against original strains of the virus, as well as Omicron variants that cause most new infections. Half of the vaccine is the original formula, while the other half is a new Omicron-targeted formula. The COVID-19 vaccines for children have the same active ingredients as the primary vaccines given to adults. However, children receive a smaller, age-appropriate dose that is the right size for them. The recommended vaccination schedule from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including dosage, is available here.
Updated, bivalent COVID-19 vaccines help to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination and help to fight off a wider range of variants.
